Le Havre's 16-metre quay to lure MSC megaships to new port area

GENEVA's Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has revealed its first mega ships will berth in Le Havre's new Port 2000 dock early next year, reports London's Containerisation International.

"The installation of a major hub for MSC at Port 2000 marks a new stage of development for the shipping line in Le Havre," said Terminal Normandie MSC general manager Christian de Tinguy, the terminal operator.

"The 1,400-metre quay will enable MSC to have any kind of vessels of the fleet - including 14,000-TEU ships - calling at the same wharf whatever the time and tide," he said.

Said MSC France general manager Stephan Snijders: "The new facilities will enable our biggest vessels to benefit from a guaranteed draught of 16 metres. This will bring an increase in business and development for MSC in Le Havre."

MSC is said to be Le Havre's biggest container customer, accounting for more than a third of its box traffic. MSC runs one string from Asia, the Lion Service. Maersk has two and CMA CGM has four.
